Indian Artiste ADGRMS Makes History as the First Indian Performer at Tomorrowland
Amsterdam-based DJ and music producer, Sahil Varma, also known as ADGRMS, achieved a groundbreaking feat this year by becoming the first Indian artiste to perform at the renowned EDM festival, Tomorrowland. Held annually in Belgium over four days, the festival attracts electronic music enthusiasts from around the world. Varma took the stage at the Belgian Beer Bar on Friday, July 21, delivering a mesmerizing performance that left the crowd in awe.
Reflecting on his journey, the 26-year-old artiste shared, “Ten years ago, I dreamed of attending Tomorrowland. But I made a promise to my best friend that I would only go if my first time was as a performer. Now, it feels surreal that I’m living this dream.” Varma’s dedication and hard work have paid off, propelling him to international recognition and paving the way for future Indian artistes.
During his set at Tomorrowland, Varma showcased his versatility by blending different genres, including Afro house and techno. He always seeks to end his sets on a high note, ensuring an unforgettable experience for the audience. Originally scheduled for a 90-minute performance, Varma’s energy and connection with the crowd compelled him to play an extended three-hour set. He described it as the best performance of his career, with the audience refusing to let him leave the stage.
One of the highlights of Varma’s set was his incorporation of Hindi/Bollywood songs, adding a unique flavor to the international festival. He played iconic tracks like “Pataka Guddi” by the Noorani sisters, “Aaja Sanam” by Lata Mangeshkar, and “Mundian To Bach Ke” by Panjabi MC, among others. This fusion of cultures and musical styles further showcases Varma’s ability to captivate diverse audiences.
For Varma, Tomorrowland was not only about performing but also presented an opportunity to meet his music idols. He described the experience as “magical,” as he encountered legendary artists whom he had long admired. Among the memorable encounters was DJ Tiesto, who had been a significant inspiration for Varma. He vividly recalls attending a concert in Mumbai in 2013, where Tiesto’s commanding stage presence and ability to move a crowd captivated him. Varma had the chance to speak with Tiesto during Tomorrowland and expressed his gratitude for the impact the artist had on his own career.
As an Indian artiste, Varma’s historic performance at Tomorrowland marks a significant milestone for the country’s electronic music scene. It opens the door for more Indian talent to showcase their skills on a global platform and further enhances the diversity and inclusivity of EDM festivals. Varma’s achievement not only celebrates his personal success but also reflects the growing recognition of India’s vibrant music industry worldwide.
With his groundbreaking performance at Tomorrowland, ADGRMS has proven that dreams can become a reality with passion, dedication, and perseverance. As he continues to make waves in the music world, fans eagerly await his future projects and are excited to witness the further evolution of Indian artists on the international stage.
