Desert Hot Springs native and emerging singer-songwriter DannyLux is having quite the year. The 19-year-old musician was recently listed in Variety’s annual “Power of Young Hollywood Impact Report,” formed a brand deal with McDonald’s, and has a debut album coming out Aug. 18.
DannyLux, born Daniel Balderrama, is climbing the charts with his modern take on regional Mexican and Mexican folk music. He made his debut performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, and Balderrama also received a key to the city of Desert Hot Springs in June. He’s even been named the 2023 City of Desert Hot Springs Holiday Parade Grand Marshal on Dec. 9.
Here is how DannyLux spent his summer.
He was included on major talent-to-watch lists
Last year, Balderrama was included — among other popular young singers like Olivia Rodrigo and The Kid LAROI — in Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list. This year, on Aug. 9, his star power reached the next level when he was included in Variety’s 2023 Young Hollywood Impact Report alongside celebrities such as actor Noah Schnapp, actress Sydney Sweeney and fellow Coachella Valley native Jenna Ortega.
“After the year I’ve had, I’m not going to lie — I do feel a bit of pressure when it comes to evolving my sound because I always want to be better,” he told Variety for the report. “I want to make sure that every song I make is better than the last.”
He was in a McDonald’s commercial
McDonald’s customers in El Paso, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico are enjoying frozen Coca-Cola and flavored Fanta beverages that the desert native’s been promoting throughout the summer. DannyLux was featured in a Spanish TV commercial explaining his style of music and writing songs anyone can relate to.
But what does DannyLux order at the golden arches? Obviously, the McDonalds Frozen because “it refreshes me a lot, I just love it because there are times when it can even be a snack, so you just take it on the road wherever you are.”
He performed a sold-out tour of Mexico
Following a July concert in Salt Lake City with regional Mexican music bands, DannyLux went on a sold-out tour of Mexico in early August, performing dates in Tijuana, Monterrey and Querétaro. The final date is Aug. 13 in Mexico City.
He’ll also be performing on Aug. 19 in Denver, opening for Mexican guitarist Carla Morrison.
He finalized his debut album, which comes out this month
Dannylux announced Thursday that his debut album, “DLUX,” will be released on Aug. 18.
The album features collaborations with Mexican singers such as Gabito Ballesteros, Pablo Hurtado, Mexican-American singer Cuco and more.
