María Becerra has a lot to be thankful for. After an enormously successful 2022, which saw the release of her second studio album La Nena de Argentina, the rising star is continuing her winning streak with a new single, “Desafiando el Destino.”
Serving as a bonus track on Nena, “Desafiando el Destino” is a ballad Becerra dedicates to her parents. “It’s a letter in which I pretend to rebel against destiny when it comes to the people I love,” she said in a press release. The lyrics are self-aware as Becerra embraces her growing pains, but she expresses gratitude for those who have stayed by her side as her career continues to defy the odds. The visual for “Desafiando” includes adorable childhood footage of Becerra before she was thrusted into the limelight.
Last year, Becerra was named Spotify’s most streamed female artist from Argentina. The singer also secured a number of collaborations with big names such as Zion & Lennox, Becky G, Prince Royce, Natti Natasha, and Manuel Turizo. She hit the stage at the 2022 Grammy Awards alongside J Balvin to perform their single “Qué Más Pues?” She released buzz singles “Automático” and “Ojalá” ahead of the release of her Nena album.
Despite being a feature darling herself, Becerra defied expectations from her management and told Remezcla last month that she had to fight to release her album without any guest appearances. “I wanted to [put the album out] on my own from the start, and obviously, there were concerns because a solo album is a risk,” she said. “Lately, when someone releases an album, there’s always a [feature], even the singles too.”
2023 already looks to be promising for Becerra. This March, Becerra will be performing at Lollapalooza Argentina. “We’re planning to put together an incredible show and bring it around the world,” she shared when asked about future touring plans, adding that rehearsals are currently underway.
