Shovels & Rope

Shovels & Rope

Shovels & Rope is an American folk duo consisting of married couple Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. They formed the band in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2008. Both Trent and Hearst had pursued separate music careers before joining forces, and their collaboration brought together their individual talents and influences to create a unique blend of Americana, folk, rock, and country music. The duo is known for their raw, energetic performances and their skillful instrumentation, often switching between various instruments such as guitars, drums, harmonicas, and keyboards during their live shows. Their music is characterized by rich vocal harmonies, poignant storytelling, and a gritty, rootsy sound that draws from traditional American music as well as modern influences. Shovels & Rope gained widespread acclaim with the release of their debut album, "O' Be Joyful," in 2012, which was nominated for Best Americana Album at the Grammy Awards. They have since released several more albums, including "Swimmin' Time" (2014), "Little Seeds" (2016), and "By Blood" (2019), all of which have received critical praise for their creativity and authenticity. Throughout their career, Shovels & Rope have built a dedicated fanbase and earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic and compelling acts in contemporary folk and Americana music. They continue to tour extensively and release new music, staying true to their roots while pushing the boundaries of traditional genres.
