Phish: The Breakthrough Formation and Rise In 1983, Anastasio co-founded Phish with high school friends Mike Gordon (bass), Jon Fishman (drums), and Page McConnell (keyboard). The band initially played in the Burlington, Vermont area and quickly gained a reputation for their innovative and improvisational style. Phish’s music combined elements of rock, jazz, funk, and bluegrass, creating a unique sound that attracted a dedicated fan base.
