Pokey LaFarge Returned to The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage

On May 4, 2024, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage welcomed the return of Pokey LaFarge, a musical dynamo known for his unique blend of Americana, jazz, and roots music. LaFarge is set to perform songs from his latest album, In The Blossom of Their Shade, released via New West Records. This 10-song collection, produced and arranged by LaFarge himself alongside Chris Seefried, showcases a new, brighter chapter in LaFarge’s musical journey.

A Shift in Sound and Spirit. In The Blossom of Their Shade marks a significant shift from LaFarge’s previous work, notably his critically acclaimed 2020 album, Rock Bottom Rhapsody. The earlier album, hailed by NPR’s Fresh Air as a “Best of 2020” and an “Album that made an art of escapism,” reflected a darker period in LaFarge’s life. However, the new album emerges from a place of introspection and renewal, capturing the positivity and growth that LaFarge experienced during the pandemic.

A Time of Reflection and Growth. LaFarge’s journey to this new sound began in March 2020. He had just packed up his Los Angeles home, storing his belongings in anticipation of a busy tour schedule to promote Rock Bottom Rhapsody. Plans to showcase his new music at SXSW were thwarted by the sudden onset of the pandemic, leaving LaFarge stranded in East Austin with no clear path forward. Instead of succumbing to the uncertainty, LaFarge used this time to reflect and create.

“This album is a result of my 2020 experience. Before the pandemic, I was in a dark place, but the pandemic actually created the much-needed space for me to reflect,” LaFarge shared. “Turns out that being completely sedentary for once was a good thing. I found peace in the stillness. I was able to recalibrate what it is I do and why I’m doing it. Who I’m to do it with, and most importantly, who I’m doing it for.”

A New Sound for a New Era. In The Blossom of Their Shade departs from the melancholic tones of its predecessor, offering a soundtrack that captures the essence of a perfect summer afternoon. Initially considered for the title Siesta Love, the album reflects LaFarge’s embrace of positivity and light. The music is infused with influences from deep soul, spanning across not just the American landscape but reaching into the rich musical traditions of Africa and South America. This eclectic mix results in a vibrant collection of songs with emotional lyrics, compelling grooves, and catchy melodies.
