The Stories Behind the Music

John Mayer
🎸 The Grateful Dead Legacy

John Mayer and the Torch He May Be Setting Down

Following Bob Weir’s passing in January 2026 and the historic Dead & Company Sphere residency in Las Vegas, John Mayer has spoken candidly about what comes next. In a wide-ranging interview with USA Today, he signaled a profound shift. The era of massive Dead stadium touring appears to be giving way to something quieter and more archival. Weir died at 78 after a battle with cancer, just five months after his final shows at Golden Gate Park — a 60th anniversary celebration featuring Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson, Trey Anastasio, and Grahame Lesh. Mayer described Weir’s insistence on playing all three nights despite declining health as one of the greatest acts of heroism he had ever witnessed.

“There is a time to hold the guitar, and a time to step back and simply let the air move.”

King Gizzard Brings Out Max Weinberg

King Gizzard had a recurring guest relationship with Jay Weinberg. When Jay was unavailable for the Forest Hills run, guitarist Joey Walker announced mid-set that Jay had called his dad. Max Weinberg, fifty-year E Street Band drummer, drove to Queens and sat behind a second kit for an extended live “Hot Water.” The three-night stand also included a full Rave Show from their album “Alien Metal,” recorded on a single modular synthesizer the band calls Nathan.

Unplugged Live

Acoustic music at its most honest.
